Black Book Gallery is pleased to announce “Every Here Has A There”, new works by Colorado-based artist John Fellows, in what will be his second solo exhibition at the gallery. Fellows’ signature “contemporary folk” style weaves together layers of found paper, graphic block prints and handwritten text to create an old time, hands-on feel. The artist collects a variety of found paper, maps and books dating from the 1880’s to the present to create unique linoleum carving collages that while at the very base reflect his personal experiences, are more like a brief glimpse into another person’s story.

For this new body of work, John once again draws inspiration from his recent travels to the Swiss and French Alps, Sayulita and Baja, Mexico as well as the mountains of his home state of Colorado. Grizzled mountain men, salty sailors, stormy seas and rugged mountains layered on used nautical charts and topographic maps draw the viewer in and hopefully trigger memories of their own past travels and experiences.

John Fellows currently lives and works in Denver, Colorado. He travels constantly and spends much of his time in the outdoors, both of which impact his work. John has shown work in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, The Netherlands, and around the US. Recently his worked has been used on t-shirts for Element Skateboards, Vail Resorts and Shaun White for Target, wine labels, and featured on the cover of BombFlow magazine.

Horne and his partner, Will Suitts, at Black Book Gallery, have been working tirelessly to put together an amazing group of both national and international artists; many of whom are creating original works specifically for this show. These artists are leading the way in supporting LHSF’s “Get On the List” campaign, as well as LHSF’s Children’s Cancer Center in Tanzania. The night will be filled with art, music, fun, and a bone marrow drive which will allow you to register with the Get On the List Campaign. Black Book Gallery hopes to make a donation of $10K from original artwork sales that will help fund a Doctor at the Love Hope Strength Children’s Cancer Center in Tanzania.

Love Hope Strength Foundation, is a music-centric charity dedicated to saving the lives of people with cancer, one concert at a time. LHSF was founded in 2007 by leukemia survivors Mike Peters (of the Welsh rock band The Alarm) and James Chippendale (president of CSI Entertainment). As the world’s leading rock-and-roll cancer foundation, LHSF primarily raises its funds through musical pilgrimages to majestic sites like Mt. Everest, Mt. Fuji and Machu Picchu. Through its partnership with DKMS (the world’s largest marrow registry), they head up bone marrow drives at concerts and major musical events like Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and Austin City Limits. With more than 400 drives conducted, LHSF has added over 32,000 people to the national marrow database and found over 500 matches for patients in need of bone marrow transplants.

For the month of March we are going in a new direction with a great photography exhibit. Long time friend of the gallery Mark Sink has been working the past several years to create a city wide photography exhibition known as Month of Photography (MOP). A selection of art galleries and museums in Denver will contribute photography exhibits and we are excited to be a part of it.

“Unforeseen Coexistence” features three talented photographers with an individual focus on subject matter with an unforeseen outcome of similar emotional and physical moments captured in time.

The artists in this show are all friends from different areas of the world. They
have background’s in design, and all their work is graphical in nature but
the output and style is drastically different. “Happy Journey” is a random name
that came about over beers when checking out Hari’s collection of Indian
souvenirs in his wallet. It captures the different paths the
artists have taken in terms of life and art combined with their strong mutual
appreciation of each other – This show is an intersection of their happy
journey’s.

“This has been a frenetic, intense and satisfying year for me. I have had several successful shows including a nearly sold out show in London. My friend Sam found one of my paintings at Goodwill for $4.99 as well, imagine that. This show represents a full return to my life. I’ve had a rough few years of angry, messy, emotional entropy. Now I’m back to cleanness in my mind and it’s a relief. Many of the images here are an exploration of that frantic resentful period. Others are about a hopefulness and clarity that I feel now. As always, the central intention of this show is one of bringing together. Combining images and ideas to create controlled experiments aimed at finding things universal. 15th century Dutch painting, Hindu and Buddhist iconography from the Himalayas, 19th Century Anatomical illustration, Japanese screen paintings and Hand painted barber signs are the predominant inspirations throughout the work. This show is an attempt to wrap my fingers around one million things and lay them out flat, onto wood and paper, for you to look at” – Ravi Zupa

PEDRO BARRIOS

Joseph Martinez paints with everything on anything. Oil, acrylic, gouache, charcoal, graphite, ink and pen – nothing is safe. Through a brief stint in art school and an internship at White Walls Gallery in San Francisco he picked up many of the techniques and tricks of the trade he uses while perfecting his own style. He recently assisted artist Sam Flores on the “Terminal King’s” project, a 100’ mural for Denver International Airport. For “Long Time Strangers” Joseph challenged himself to paint the majority of his pieces smaller than a dime using matchbooks as his “canvas”. Rather than attempt to explain the level of detail and patience on display we are including pictures that should leave you excited to see more. Here are a few examples of the more than 50 matchbook paintings in the exhibit.

Pedro Barrios is inspired by patterns, sequences, colors, and Mexican cultural references. His freehand approach creates fluidity and intense detail in every stroke he paints. Pedro uses repetition as a soothing effect on his psyche to provide calm amongst chaos; this brings the viewer into his realm and provides the same sense of peace he experiences while creating the artwork. For this exhibit of work he continues to develop elements and processes that he is well known for while exploring new techniques and mediums – as well as collaborating with other artists.

Internationally-renown artist, muralist and author Caleb Neelon’s new works weave together influences from his New England heritage, referencing maritime imagery, quilting, and regional folk arts. Raul Gonzalez III will present a suite of new drawings, created on paper stained with soil, coffee, and dirty water, which explore the sense of adventure that ensues upon embarking on a voyage. Characters find themselves adrift on flotation devices or trudging through barren landscapes unsure of what awaits them while shedding what they’ve left behind.

Caleb Neelon was born in 1976 in Boston and is based in neighboring Cambridge. His paintings and installation artwork have appeared in venues such as the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, deCordova Museum, Laguna Beach Art Museum, Dafen Art Museum of Shenzhen, as murals on walls in Kathmandu, Reykjavik, Tegucigalpa, Bermuda, Istanbul, Calcutta, São Paulo, across Europe, as well as numerous hospitals and schools. Caleb Neelon’s Book of Awesome, his first artist monograph, is a 2009 release from Gingko Press. Caleb is co-author (with Roger Gastman) of the landmark 2011 HarperCollins book The History of American Graffiti, and is also co-author of Graffiti Brasil, Street World, and an author or collaborator on nearly a dozen other books. Caleb speaks regularly at universities, international conferences and festivals, recently including TEDxBoston and the United States Embassy and consulates of Canada. In the past year, Caleb’s projects have been featured in the New York Times, Huffington Post, Life Magazine, Berliner Zeitung, Folha de São Paulo, PBS Newshour, LA Times, Boston Phoenix, Wall Street Journal, Reason, City Journal, Paper, Artlog, and others.

Raúl Gonzalez III was born in El Paso, Texas and grew up going back and forth between El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, México. In 2009 Gonzalez received an award from the Artadia Foundation for Art and Culture, and was voted Boston’s best visual artist for 2010 by readers of The Boston Phoenix. His work has been exhibited widely in the northeast including The Drawing Center in New York, Boston Institute of Contemporary Art, The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Ogunquit Museum of American Art as well as on the west coast at SCION Installation and Self-Help Graphics in Los Angeles. Gonzalez’ work has been featured in Juxtapoz, Beautiful/Decay, Art Papers, and the Boston Globe.
